Montec Outwear Shoot - California Backcountry Skiing

Montec has been one of my favorite clients to work with. Last winter they hired me to shoot their latest outerwear in action in the California backcountry. I brought 2 of Lake Tahoe’s best backcountry skiers along with a guide to Sonora Pass for the 4 day shoot. For almost 2 months this shoot was postponed because California was getting buried with too much snow, and the sun hadn’t been seen in weeks. We we patient and when we saw a promising weather window we leapt at the opportunity. These are California’s first sunny days of riding after a record breaking January and the all time snowiest month in history: February 2019.

Shot on Sony A7sii, GoPro Hero7 Black, and GoPro Fusion. Stabilized GoPro follow cams accomplished with the GoPro Karma Grip. Stabilized Sony shots accomplished with EVO Rage 2. I used pp8 on the sony, shooting in slog2, which gave a nice flat profile that made it easier to match with the GoPro Hero7 and Fusion.

Huge thanks to my athletes Henry Holdsworth and Jed Kravitz, and to our spectacular guide Scotty Smith, as well as to Montec for allowing us to put this together.

BACKPACKING MT. WHITNEY 2019

This is short film of my family’s backpacking trip this last August. I wanted to see if shooting in a non-log gamma profile on the Sony would produce shots noticeably lacking in dynamic range, but am very pleased with how the content came out. This was shot on my A7iii with the Sony 24-70mm f4 lens using the HLG2 gamma profile and BT2020 color space. After this I will be sticking with HLG2, the footage was much easier to expose and color grade than either Slog2/3
